The nativity scene was my sainted grandmother’s. It was only 9 inches long, 6 inches high, four inches wide and made out of cheap plastic, but it held court under every Christmas tree in my grandparents home that I can remember.

As a little girl, I would lie on my stomach under the colorful winking lights of the tree, gently touching the tiny figures glued to the stable floor and being fascinated about the Christmas story. Imagining how the parents felt with their newborn lying in the scratchy straw and wondering how they kept from freezing to death, I would make up stories about how I would give them a blanket, or food, or pay for their hotel, or bring them home with me.

Years later, it ended up in my possession. I put it under our tree each year, soon to be hidden by the many packages and holiday wrappings, and forgotten. Just like those Christmases long ago were.

Last year, my son sat on it and it exploded into a million pieces. He was so upset that he had broken the ‘family heirloom’ that I almost laughed.

Almost.

I assured him that is wasn’t worth anything and not to worry about it. But the next morning I found it back under the tree all in one piece. When I asked why he had stayed up half the night painstakingly gluing it back together when we had my expensive ceramic set to showcase. To my surprise, he shared with me how, as a little boy, he used to lie under the lights of the tree and make up stories about the family in the manger.

This year it is under the tree again and everytime I look at it, I think of Christmas at my grandmother’s and how proud she would be of her great grandson staying up all night to redeem something that holds nothing more than sentimental value.

Makes me kinda proud too.

Turkey, turkey sandwiches, turkey pot pie, turkey salad, turkey gumbo…

I think I am as stuffed now as the turkey was. Although we ate Thanksgiving at some dear friends, my husband decided we needed to cook a turkey for the home front. So we did. Not because we love the bird that much, but because we love what you can do with the bird AFTER Thanksgiving. (See above) He loves to make his famous turkey salad – which only he loves – and I love to make turkey gumbo – which I love.

My two youngest sons favorite thing about this holiday is that they get to start putting up the Christmas decorations. We’re talking shades of the Griswalds here. But since work for one of them interfered this weekend, the only thing up when I got home from shopping yesterday was the wreath on the front door (minus the lights which will come later). Of course, they didn’t think to take down the Fall decorations yet.

This is the weekend they also give me their Christmas Lists. We have done this ever since they could write and I have kept them all. Almost every one of them starts with “Dear Santa, I have been good this year…” (Right! Santa wasn’t born yesterday!)

This year my youngest son did it on a powerpoint presentation. Ah, modern technology!

Our server was down yesterday almost ALL day long! Had blogging withdrawals!

Sad that today is Sunday and tomorrow work awaits. Where did the weekend go?

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am so thankful for all my family and my friends. Each one of you are so special in my heart that sometimes it hurts.

My wish for you during this holiday:

May you always have
Walls for the winds,
A roof for the rain,
Tea beside the fire,
Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you,
And all your heart might desire! ~Irish Blessing

You Are Pumpkin Pie

Even when people are full – they make room for you.
Good or bad, your smell is most likely to arouse a man.

You Should Learn Swedish

Fantastisk! You’re laid back about learning a language – and about life in general.
Peaceful, beautiful Sweden is ideal for you… And you won’t even have to speak perfect Swedish to get around!

Not so laid back today…

Had a scary moment for awhile. Yesterday at work, I felt a ‘pop’ in my left eye and then all I could see was bright lights. It lasted about ten minutes and then totally went away. I forgot all about it, but since I was seeing the doctor this afternoon about something totally unrelated, I happened to remember and mention it. Immediately, they got on the phone and made me an appointment to see an opthamologist wanting to rule out a detached retina.

Wow! THAT never even crossed my mind. But as I traveled the short distance to the other office, visions of surgery danced in my head. I don’t have time for surgery. I have so many things I need to do BEFORE Christmas and it is going to take every bit of the month of December to do it. Surgery is not included in my plans for December.

Two things I found out at the opthamologist office. 1) it wasn’t a detached retina (thank the good Lord), but something called ocular migraines. (Never heard of ’em.) and 2) I HATE having my eyes dilated!

Not. Fun. At. All!

Especially when the sun is shining at about a bazillion megawatts.
Especially when I have to drive myself home.
Especially when I still had to pick the dog up from the vet, the laundry from the dry cleaners, and groceries from the store.

But not having a detached retina is one more thing I have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

I forgot how two year olds can fight. Over identical toys. They look the same, act the same, sound the same, move the same (the toys not the twins) and yet there must be a minute difference that can only be seen when you are less than three feet high. I played referee all weekend long. But I am still smarter than they are and when I hear “Colby haf’ it first” I know it probably means that Brady was playing with it and Colby can’t find his and wants Brady’s. Or vice versa. So then NaNa spends the next fifteen minutes looking for Colby’s. Or Brady’s. But that is the joy of being a Nana. Plus you can go home after the weekend is over.

I am so off work the rest of the week! Looking forward to Thanksgiving at J & M’s and having the rest of the weekend off. Am planning on doing some serious writing. Plus the girls with our RWA chapter are going to try and get together and go see Pride and Prejudice. You know, I am ashamed to say I have never read the book. Bad Sandy.

So excited that CeCe’s new book is out tonight. Check out the cover. It is so hot! Got my copy already!

Your senses are pretty sharp (okay, most of the time)
And it takes something big to distract you!

Inspired by the above new song by Country singer :cowboy: Bobby Pinson , here is my list:

1. …don’t drive up a steep hill with a new refrigerator loaded in the back of your pickup and forget to tie it down.

2. …don’t hold your keys and the trash in the same hand as you head to the garbage can.

3. …don’t put your purse, your extra set of keys, your cell phone, and your dog in the front seat of the car with the motor running and the windows rolled up and step back in the house for something.

4. …don’t take a drink on a Disneyworld ride and not think it won’t show up on the picture they post on the outside.

5. …don’t fish off the front of a boat in case the driver decides to back it up.

6. …don’t think airlines won’t notice that you are over the luggage weight limit.

7. …don’t slide down a 6 story vertical water slide on a dare. Trust me on this one…just don’t.

8. …don’t win $400.00 on a slot machine and put it all back in.

9. …don’t drool all over a country western star’s hand telling him you have ‘all’ his CD’s when he only has one.

10. ..don’t blog anything you don’t want your husband to read.

Have any you would like to share?

LOST

Loved Lost last night. There is something magical to me when a writer can take a character I don’t care for, even so much as to hate, and make you sympathetic to them. They did it with Shannon and now with Ana Lucia. Now that we’re all caught up with the other side of the island, I hope the plot moves a little faster. And nothing better happen to either Sawyer or Syed!

Other News

Got an acceptance back on my short story I submitted to The Scruffy Dog Review. Really rocks to have that waiting in my inbox when I got home yesterday. They are asking for a few revisions and will definitely work on them this weekend.

Get to see our grandtwins this weekend. Hate the five and half hour drive though. This will be the first time we have been there since hurricane Rita hit so it will be interesting to see what has changed.

LOVE this cold weather. But ask me if I still do come March. Still trying to find the codes to put the local weather on my sidebar.

Have a great weekend in case I don’t get to blog until I get back!

This year, Fall must’ve snuck through when I was doing something else. Yesterday it was in the high 70’s, humid and sunny. By tonight, it will be in the low 30’s. Will definitely be good to freeze these allergies making everyone miserable. BUT I MISSED FALL!

Can you believe we have our 27th tropical storm forming as we speak? Gamma. That’s the name. We have exhausted the English alphabet so now working on the Greek. I just read Sidney Sheldon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark and he tells of world powers that have, in real life, created and patented machines to mess with the weather. Sounds like a conspiracy theory to me, but, who knows, stranger things have happened. Look at this year alone.

Check Mik’s new blog look. Upbeat, trendy, bright – it really rocks. And thanks to her for helping me with my new look. I have learned a lot under her patient teachings and owe her some serious Starbucks :coffee: She also has a poem, Clarity, published Monday with Circadian Poems. Very emotional and full of angst. If you can make the reader feel – whether it be sadness, anger, hope or hopelessness, joy, etc. – then you have done your job. Well done, Mik!

Proud of Dennie’s hard work and devotion to NaNo! She will definitely be listed under the winner’s page! You go, girlfriend!

On a very sad note, one of my coworker’s husband had suffered a cough that wouldn’t go away with three rounds of antibiotics so the doctor did a chest x-ray. Noting a small shadow that shouldn’t be there, an MRI was ordered and from that they found cancer. In his lungs, pancreas, liver, bones, just about everywhere but his brain. My heart and prayers go to him and the family. He is only 30 years old and given six months to live.

Makes you realize you have a lot to be thankful for.

Speaking of thankful, Thanksgiving is NEXT WEEK! Where did this year go??? Christmas is, ohmygosh, right around the corner! My son text messaged me at work yesterday to inform me that the radio station, 103.7, is already playing continuous Christmas music. I refuse to listen until after the Macy’s Day Parade! I refuse!

Once a month, I treat myself to a professional pedicure. It’s such a wonderful pampered feeling that I believe everyone, men included, should try it occasionally. The other day, as my feet were blissfully soaking in a warm, vibrating foot bath, I happened to overhear the lady in the chair next to me make a remark that had more than my foot bath water boiling.

She was saying that the reason things were in such a turmoil in this world was because women were not as submissive to their husbands as they should be.

She said that if women knew their place, then there would be less problems in this world. Now, if she chooses to believe this, that is her business. I even understand what she is referring to, but think think she has it all out of whack.

She happened to be talking to a young mother of three who mentioned that she and her husband had been having trouble and didn’t know what to do about it.

I couldn’t help it. My mouth took on a life of its own. Read the rest of this entry »

You Are Internal – Realist – Empowered

You feel your life is controlled internally.
If you want something, you make it happen.
You don’t wait around for things to go your way.
You value your independence and don’t like others to have control.

You are a realist when it comes to luck.
You don’t attribute everything to luck, but you do know some things are random.
You don’t beat yourself up when bad things happen to you…
But you do your best to try to make your own luck.

You have a good deal of power, but you also know the pecking order.
You realize that working the system does get you further.
You know who to defer to and who to control.
When it comes to the game of life, you play things flawlessly.
